What it means to look at a marriage from outside the door — and what we still can’t know.

I have a quip that I routinely make: if you think someone has a normal family, you don’t know their family very well. I think I came up with that myself. Maybe I heard it somewhere I no longer remember.

No matter. Let’s extend the point.

If you think a marriage is perfect, or even always pleasant, the thing you actually know is that you are not one of the people in it.

Because there is no perfect marriage, and even disastrous marriages are rarely disastrous in precisely the same way every moment of every day. There are millions upon millions of marriages that exist behind closed doors, where what you would see if you were let in would depend on the day. Or even the decade.
